Neighborhood Council Meeting Round-Up [1/9-1/13]

Neighborhood Council Meeting Round-Up [1/9-1/13]

Every week, in every part of the City, there’s a neighborhood council meeting happening. They’re usually not too far away from where you live if you live in the city limits. If you’ve never been, perhaps tonight’s the night to be involved with your community.

Not sure what neighborhood you live in? The City has a map for that. An agenda will be linked to - if it’s available.

Mayor goes on patrol with Spokane Police

Mayor goes on patrol with Spokane Police

Spokane's new mayor rode with Spokane Police only once before he was elected - when he was a candidate for the mayoral position. Wednesday, David Condon was back in a patrol vehicle as the top elected official in the city with hopes to make massive changes in Spokane Police Department from personnel to accountability.

Recent changes include extending Scott Stephens' role as the interim chief of police after the recent retirement of Anne Kirkpatrick.

Entering the world of law enforcement can be a little jarring, but due to his military experience Condon wasn't taken aback to the sight of military-grade weapons. If anything surprised Condon, it was the magnitude of call variety. In one situation, officers had to determine whether or not a high-speed chase was necessary in traffic conditions.

“I was listening to the officers go back and forth while it was happening. To continue or not? We’re the streets busy or not?” Condon explained.

Air Travel Down, Freight Flights Up

Air Travel Down, Freight Flights Up

If you boarded a plane at Spokane International Airport in 2011, you may have noticed you had a little more elbow room.  According to Todd Woodard with the SIA,  air travel was down by 2.91 percent from 2010.  In 2010, 2.9 million passengers traveled through the Spokane.  In 2011, the airport reports 2.8 million passengers boarded and unloaded planes.  However, in November air travel was up from the year before with .64 percent more people flying the friendly skies.

"While our community has experienced the results of a nationwide daily capacity re-balancing by scheduled passenger airlines, we were optimistic based on observations that would trend in a positive manner," said Lawrence Krauter CEO of the Spokane Air Board.

The airport also reports a 25 percent increase in freight and mail in 2011, with 4,772 tons traveling  down the runways.

Seattle Mariners pitchers visiting Spokane

Seattle Mariners pitchers visiting Spokane

Every year the Seattle Mariners likes to show off some of their up and coming players on the team. This year they’re shipping Blake Beavan and Tom Wilhelmsen around the Pacific Northwest to visit with fans and schools. Beavan and Wilhelmsen are both pitchers who debuted during the 2011 season.

They’ll be making a stop in Spokane next week. On Wednesday, January 11th, they’ll stop by Spokane Falls Community College for a free autograph session. Broadcaster Mike Blowers and the Mariner Moose will be with them as well.

The Mariner’s head to spring training in Arizona on March 2nd so they’re still well into the off-season at this point.

The Seattle Mariners have been doing their northwest tour for the past 20 years.

Pitcher Blake Beavan was one of four rookie pitchers to make his Major League debut with the Mariners in 2011. He had 15 starts, 11 of them recorded as “quality starts.” His debut, and first win, was July 3 vs. San Diego. Beavan allowed just one run on three hits over seven innings in a 3-1 victory. Beavan was one of four players obtained from the Texas Rangers in July 2010 for pitcher Cliff Lee.

Super 1 , Super Re-Openning

Super 1 , Super Re-Openning

Wednesday was the re-grand openning of the Super 1 in the Manito Center at 29th and Grand. As a past shopper I can tell you the feel is completely different.

Jeff Phillips, CEO made a grand gesture with his hand as he told me, "We touched and improved every square inch of this store."

He was right they did and with brighter lights, wider isles and improved sections from the bakery to the bulk all natural selection. Shoppers were digging it. Their goal is to have you try it, Super 1 thinks you'll be back, so do I. Nice job, good luck to you all.
