Seattle Mariners pitchers visiting Spokane

Seattle Mariners pitchers visiting Spokane

Every year the Seattle Mariners likes to show off some of their up and coming players on the team. This year they’re shipping Blake Beavan and Tom Wilhelmsen around the Pacific Northwest to visit with fans and schools. Beavan and Wilhelmsen are both pitchers who debuted during the 2011 season.

They’ll be making a stop in Spokane next week. On Wednesday, January 11th, they’ll stop by Spokane Falls Community College for a free autograph session. Broadcaster Mike Blowers and the Mariner Moose will be with them as well.

The Mariner’s head to spring training in Arizona on March 2nd so they’re still well into the off-season at this point.

The Seattle Mariners have been doing their northwest tour for the past 20 years.

Pitcher Blake Beavan was one of four rookie pitchers to make his Major League debut with the Mariners in 2011. He had 15 starts, 11 of them recorded as “quality starts.” His debut, and first win, was July 3 vs. San Diego. Beavan allowed just one run on three hits over seven innings in a 3-1 victory. Beavan was one of four players obtained from the Texas Rangers in July 2010 for pitcher Cliff Lee.

Super 1 , Super Re-Openning

Super 1 , Super Re-Openning

Wednesday was the re-grand openning of the Super 1 in the Manito Center at 29th and Grand. As a past shopper I can tell you the feel is completely different.

Jeff Phillips, CEO made a grand gesture with his hand as he told me, "We touched and improved every square inch of this store."

He was right they did and with brighter lights, wider isles and improved sections from the bakery to the bulk all natural selection. Shoppers were digging it. Their goal is to have you try it, Super 1 thinks you'll be back, so do I. Nice job, good luck to you all.

Condon announces changes for Spokane Police during first mayoral press conference

Tuesday was Mayor David Condon's first day in office as well as his first press conference under that title. Held at the Nevada-Lidgerwood Neighborhood C.O.P.S. building, he brought together some new and old faces to introduce parts of his new team.

The topics surrounded Spokane Police Department with the creation of advisory boards and commissions to create a better model to deliver police services in Spokane.

Immediate actions also include the evaluation of police body cameras that could be implemented. In Seattle, they're having the same discussions. In a report with the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, city councilman Bruce Harrell says he wants to test out the cameras thinking it would provide stronger oversight and project officers from misconduct allegations.

More moose spotted along High Drive Bluff

More moose spotted along High Drive Bluff

Another moose was spotted Monday afternoon on Spokane's South Hill. Diana Roberts, WSU extension agronomist, happened upon a moose calf hanging out on the High Drive Bluff just below Bernard Street along the trails.

Roberts says the calf's mother was further up the hill out of sight.

Geoff Forshag's wife saw another moose, possibly the cow, Tuesday morning. He wrote on Facebook: "She and a friend came around a corner and there she was - they wisely beat a hasty retreat."

Neighbors are reminded to keep a wide berth from moose and to keep dogs on leash. When moose are spotted so close to neighborhoods, not only does it become a hazard for residents, it's also dangerous for the animals.

Search for moose brings Fish and Wildlife to Glennaire Drive

Search for moose brings Fish and Wildlife to Glennaire Drive

A possibly injured moose limped its way into the hills behind Glennaire Drive neighborhoods Tuesday morning. The incident was originally called into the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office by office staff at Moran Prairie Elementary who noticed it hanging around their school’s parking lot. The school’s principal, Dr. Mark Gorman, made sure no children were outside at the time.

Office staff watched as the moose, a young adult, adventured across the parking lot and into the playground. From there it crossed into the field at 57th and Glenrose Rd. crossing the street into the residential roads of the Glennaire neighborhood.

Sheriff’s Deputies and Fish and Wildlife officers unpacked their hazing gear from their vehicles at Glennaire Dr. and Williamette St. The moose was seen heading into the forested area just beyond the road. They marched through the tall grass hoping to find it. Just beyond the tree line, it was briefly seen darting into heavier patches of woods. Officers decided it was best to leave it be.

8th Least-Snowy December in Spokane History

8th Least-Snowy December in Spokane History

There was no White Christmas in Spokane this year, and the snow in the valleys has been in short supply.

Officially at the airport, we recorded 2.4" of snow for the entire month.  That's the least amount in more than 30 years, but not quite a record.  Only a  trace of snow was recorded for the month of December in both 1900 and 1901.

Our 2.4" made it the 8th least snowy December since 1881.   December is climatologically  our snowiest month.  Spokane averages 14.6" during a normal year, but this is a La Nina year, and this forecaster expected even more.

There are no major changes in our weather pattern in the 7-day forecast.  Wet weather is possible on Thursday, but it will likely be more rain than snow.
