Spokane Public Schools Offering Summer Meals

Spokane Public Schools will be offering summer meals so that children who rely school meals won't go hungry during summer break.

Summer meals will be available at schools, community centers, YMCA locations and even the Hillyard pool. Meals are free and for all children and teens 18 years old and younger. There is no registration required, and children can come any day that they choose.

The only rules, other than age, are that the meals must received as an entire unit and that the meals must be enjoyed on site. Parents are encouraged to join their kids, but are asked to bring their own meal. All meals are on a first come, first serve basis.

All locations will be serving lunch, and some will also be serving breakfast. Summer meals will begin on June 17th and be available through August 23rd, there will be no meals available on July4th and 5th.

SCOPE volunteers involved in burglary fired

Two SCOPE volunteers have been fired for their involvement in a burglary over the weekend where a man living in a home was assaulted.

The incident started around 11 p.m. Saturday.�Court documents state 22-year-old Eric Ortiz showed up at the home on the 1000 block of�E. 29th Avenue and identified himself as a sheriff's deputy and part of the gang task force. Ortiz�broke into the detached�garage and started hitting the victim inside over a personal dispute.

Witnesses also said a woman�with Ortiz�was wearing an official looking uniform too,�but neither she nor Ortiz are�deputies.

People at the home�say the woman and another man who accompanied Ortiz were both SCOPE�volunteers, and�even drove up in an official�SCOPE car,�but just stood by as the crime happened.

"SCOPE has�been around nearly 20 years now. We have had very few instances similar to this," SCOPE Director Rick Scott said.

Scott said Saturday night's incident is disappointing, and both of the volunteers were fired Tuesday morning.

Mayor To Host Telephone Town Hall Meeting

Spokane residents will be able to be get informed on the developing 2014 budget at a Telephone Town Hall meeting hosted by Mayor David Condon on Wednesday at 6pm

 

Residents can call in from 6 to 7pm at the toll-free number 888-409-5380, to ask Mayor Condon questions about the budget and give other input. The city will also send out thousands of calls asking residents if they would like to participate in the meeting.

 

“Our intention is to provide citizens with information early and throughout the process of developing the 2014 budget,” Condon said. “Last year’s budget approach taught us a lot about how to provide citizens more information earlier and help the public participate in the process.”

 

This will be the first of many opportunities for Spokane citizens to voice their opinions on budget and other concerns including community presentations by members of the Mayor’s cabinet and neighborhood council meetings. There are no specific dates yet for these events.

 

Deputies in Oz Fitness tasing incident identified

The Spokane County Sheriff?s Office has identified the two deputies that responded to the disorderly person call at Oz Fitness last Thursday evening that resulted in a man being tased.

The deputies are Shawn Audie and Steve Paynter. Audie, a field training officer and defense tactics instructor, has been employed with the sheriff?s office for 12 years and has received 12 letters of commendation.

Deputy Paynter, who has also served as a field training officer, has been employed with the sheriff?s office for 13 years and has received 11 letters of commendation.

Deputies were called to Oz Fitness on the South Hill just after 7 p.m. last Thursday when reports indicated a man was behaving erratically. Witnesses say the man, later identified as Will Berger, was throwing equipment around, mumbling under his breath and using racial slurs.

Deputies were forced to tase Berger, who lost consciousness. He was taken to the hospital where he was later pronounced brain dead. Berger died on Friday after his family took him off life support.

Man involved in Oz Fitness rampage dies

The man who was tased by deputies after going on a rampage at a South Hill gym has died.

The Washington State Patrol, which is leading the investigation into the incident, confirmed Will Berger, 34, was taken off life support and his internal organs were harvested for donation sometime Friday evening.

A release from the medical examiner's office after an autopsy was performed on Berger Monday listed his cause of death as "Pending further studies" and manner of death as "Pending further investigation."

Berger was involved in an altercation with Spokane County Sheriff's deputies outside the Oz Fitness located at 55th and Regal Thursday evening. Witnesses say that Berger went out of control, screaming at inanimate objects, mumbling racial slurs and throwing weights around.

Employees at the fitness center confronted Berger and got him out of the gym and into the parking lot. Witnesses said at this point he was foaming at the mouth.

When deputies arrived, Berger allegedly pounded on the hood of a patrol car, got into an altercation of some sort with deputies, who then used their tasers in an attempt to subdue him.

Click it or Ticket Presents Positive Results

As part of Target Zero Task Force, a traffic safety program that strives to end traffic deaths and serious injuries in Washington by 2030, Click it or Ticket recently showed successful results. The goal was to pursue unbuckled and distracted drivers.

More than 130 police and sheriff agencies statewide worked the extra patrols, funded by a grant from the Washington Traffic Safety Commission.

Between May 20th and June 2nd, extra law enforcement patrolled Spokane, Whitman, Pend Oreille and Ferry County roads looking for unbuckled drivers and passengers, and motorists using their cell phones or other electronic devices.

During these patrols, 297 seatbelt infractions were written, in addition to 101 cell phone/texting or usage of other electronic device tickets.
