Booze News: Winery joins forces with brandy distillery

Knipprath Cellars plans on sharing their space with a new business later this summer. Tinbender Craft Distillery is moving into a room previously used as a storage area for the east Spokane winery located in the old Parkwater Schoolhouse at 5634 E. Commerce Ave.

The winery owner, Henning Knipprath, confirmed the new tenant and says they’re incorporating part of the distillery operations into the winery later this summer.

The distillery will have separate equipment, but there will be some overlap in raw materials geared toward a variety of brandy. Brandy is a liquor distilled from wine or fermented fruit juice.

The owner of Tinbender Craft Distillery, Paul Ziegried, says they're still in the application process for liquor permits and are jumping through government loops, but they plan on constructing the distillery this summer and hope to start producing later this year in the winter.

Grapes used for Knipprath Cellar's wine will be an option for their brandy production, but Ziegried says he'll branch out to other Washington grape growers as well.

An overlapping tasting room has yet to be determined.

Unlike the former occupant, the new spa will have a private club beer and wine license. They can sell alcohol on-tap, or from bottles or cans for consumption inside the spa.

A new credit union is coming to the South Hill's Moran Prairie. Spokane Teachers Credit Union broke ground on its new 4,096-square-foot branch near Regal and 57th in early July. The branch, located at 5711 S. Hailee Lane, should be finished by mid-October.

This newest STCU will be the 16th branch for the region's largest credit union. STCU actually bought the piece of land the future credit union will sit on back in 2008, but wasn't ready to build the new branch until now.

"The area is growing and it fits the needs of our members who live in the area. Our south branch is only getting busier and busier," STCU spokesperson Dan Hansen said.

The branch was designed by Nystrom+Olson Architecture. It will cost $916,000 and will be built by Walker Construction.

Booze News: Opening day for European-styled cafe

Booze News: Opening day for European-styled cafe

Beignets et la café, an European-styled cafe is now open in downtown Spokane. Located at 121 N. Wall, they have an open, but sit-down atmosphere. They serve bags of fried pastries which are their namesake. There is also an assortment of crepes on their limited menu.

A full bar is located around the corner, but at 10 a.m. that wasn't our priority. The beignets are a sugary powdery mess so beware.

Your Workspace: A Peek into Fire Station #1

Your Workspace: A Peek into Fire Station #1

What’s your desk look like? Is it messy or clean? Do you keep photos of your family or print out your favorite quotes? Every week on KXLY, we’re going to feature a different workspace in the community. You might recognize the names of the people highlighted, or know of outcome of their work.

Last week we spoke with the Inland Northwest Blood Center about their communal treadmill desk, but here’s another workspace that shows another perspective of office life.

Brian Schaeffer is the assistant fire chief for Spokane Fire Department. That’s the number two position in the organization and he’s responsible for the executive leadership for the chief. He’s also the main contact for media in Spokane, though it’s not part of his job description. Eight-years-ago, he took it up to be assertive with media and give them the information they need to help keep the community informed.

On a normal day’s work he’s responsible for the day to day operations and the training division. He has a mobile office in his work vehicle, but also a casual side to his Fire Station 1 office. Complete with a couch, Shaeffer keeps his workspace comfortable for himself and to the people he collaborates with.

Perry District welcomes new restaurant Casper Fry

Perry District welcomes new restaurant Casper Fry

Deb Green put a lot of love into her newest restaurant creation, Casper Fry, co-owned with her daughter and son. After all, it’s named after her great-grandfather, a Spokane minister who preached at the former Liberty Park Baptist Church. The southern-inspired venue opened quietly on Wednesday for lunch, but word soon escaped that they were taking orders for shrimp po’boy, grits, and mac and cheese in a cast-iron dish.

Green and her family isn’t new to the restaurant business. They already own Madeleine’s in downtown Spokane. Don’t expect the same style though because Green says her new restaurant is the polar opposite.

“I kind of think of Casper Fry as Madeleine’s naughty brother. They’re just so different. Madeleine’s is feminine,” Green described. “Casper Fry is very masculine and industrial.”

They had to get the wood floor just right with layers of varnish and staining so guests could walk on what appears to be vintage hardwood floors. They brought in the slabs of wood from a demolished farm in Ritzville. The planks of salvaged wood make up the ceiling and even the tables. They were made specifically by two carpenters who live in the neighborhood.
