Breakfast Fundraiser with Kelly Graves

Breakfast Fundraiser with Kelly Graves

The Spokane Youth Sports Association (SYSA) is pleased to announce their upcoming "Breakfast with a Side of Sportsmanship" fundraising event on Thursday, June 7 at 7:30 am.  The breakfast will be held at the SYSA Bingo Hall on 2230 E. Sprague.

A minimum contribution of $100 is requested, but all gifts are welcome.  This year’s breakfast host is 700 ESPN's Rick Lukens and the featured speaker is Gonzaga Women's Basketball Coach, Kelly Graves.

Graves has turned the GU women’s basketball team into one of the elite programs in the nation in his 11 years at the helm.  He led GU to their unprecedented seventh-straight West Coast Conference Championship and fourth WCC Tournament Title in the last five yeaers.  He has also taken the Lady Zags to the Sweet Sixteen for the past three years and to the Elite Eight once.

SYSA has over 8000 youths participating in sports and camps throughout the year.  Over 600 youths were able to participate because of the generous support from the community totaling more than $40,000 to the SYSA Scholarship fund in 2011!

Building neighborhood libraries of all shapes and sizes

Building neighborhood libraries of all shapes and sizes

Driving by Mary Maxfield’s home, you’d think you’re passing a giant bird house. Technically it’s a home, but it’s filled with books. Last month she installed a library in her front lawn at 46th and Crestline.

If you think that’s unusual, Maxfield isn’t alone. She’s one of thousands of residents across the United States bringing literature to their neighborhoods.

Magazines, children’s books and nonfiction novels are available for your perusal by opening the glass door. Maxfield says she saw a neighbor girl read a Bernenstain Bears book, front to cover, while waiting for her mother.

“We love books so much. For the kids that come by during the summer time when they don’t have their school libraries, it’s good to know have something they can come get. The challenge for me is keeping new books in there,” Maxfield said.

It’s based on the honor system. You take a book and bring it back. If you like, you can trade out a book of your own with one already in there.

The concept comes from Little Free Library, an non-profit that supplies the kits and plans to build these libraries all over the world. They incorporate volunteer stewards to help keep the little libraries going with kits ranging in prices from $100-600.

Lincoln Heights student honored as crosswalk guard

Lincoln Heights student honored as crosswalk guard

You see them on your morning commute, elementary kids patrolling crosswalks ensuring the safety of pedestrians, their classmates. Last week, a Spokane 6th grader was honored for his role as a patrolman at Lincoln Heights Elementary.

Hunter Stokes is one of ten students inducted into the 2012 AAA School Safety Patrol Hall of Fame. He was recognized at an awards ceremony at Safeco Field on May 4th.

His patrol adviser, Terri Cates, says Stokes saw many close calls at crossing stations and wanted to make it safer. His solution was to require cars park at least 20 feet away to avoid blocking the view of the crosswalk.

The ten other students honored were from areas of Western Washington and Ritzville.

Local cleaning company wants to help more cancer patients

Local cleaning company wants to help more cancer patients

A local cleaning company is doing more than just cleaning homes, they're helping to rebuild local women's lives.

Spokane's Cleaning Authority, which has several locations in our region, is partnering with a new non-profit called Cleaning For A Reason.

They're cleaning cancer patient's and survivor's homes - for free.

Cleaning For A Reason was started by a woman in Texas who was a cancer survivor herself, and also owned a large cleaning company.  Her idea was to offer women in cancer treatment a series of free home cleanings. She wanted cancer patients to focus on recovery, rather than the status of their home.

In Spokane, Mark Silver and the rest of the workers at Cleaning Authority provided about 50 free cleans this last year. But they want to do more. They're trying to get the word out about their free cleaning service to cancer patients in our area. They have the capacity and the willingness to help many more people.

It's Time For Women Build

It's Time For Women Build

Ladies, grab your tool belts and help build! Don't have a tool belt? No big deal. You don't even have to know how to hammer a nail to take part in the annual Women Build. It's a national event sponsored by Lowe's, in which women from all walks of life come together to help eliminate poverty housing.

This year the Women Build is this Wednesday, May 9th. They still need volunteers. Call Shona Bose to get involved, (509) 534-2552, ext. 21.

A few facts about Habitat-Spokane:

  • Last year, it built 8 new homes and rebuilt 10 others.
  • At any given time, Habitat is working with 25 to 35 families. About 3,000 volunteers work two shifts year round each year.
  • Habitat currently works with 100 active churches in the Spokane area, as well as some non-affiliated faith groups.

New South Hill trail connection to Dishman Hills natural area

New South Hill trail connection to Dishman Hills natural area

Spokane County is trying to make it a little easier for you to get out and get some exercise! The county is forming a new trailhead connecting the South Hill to the Dishman Hills Natural Area this month.

The trailhead is located on the 3700 block of South Thierman Road in the Glenrose area, two miles east of Ferris High School. The county used Conservation Futures Funding to buy the 269-acre plot of land on April 12.

According to Jeff Lambert, Vice President of the Dishman Hills Natural Area Association, the new Conservation Area lies in the path of the Dream Trail, which will take the  "Connecting People to Nature" project and connect it to the Iller Creek Conservation Area on the south end of the Dishman Hills Natural Area.

Connecting the two conservation areas would result in a wildlife and recreation corridor of more than six miles, with a network of recreation trails of many miles.

The Dishman Hills Natural Area Association is holding a dinner at the Moran Prairie Grange to celebrate the new trailhead on May 12. The celebration is a member-only event, but you can join for a special $10 dues through May 12 via www.DHNAA.org.

Looking to share with neighbors? Try Nextdoor.

We just stumbled upon this website after Spokane C.O.P.S. shared it on Facebook. Nextdoor is a private social network built for very localized neighborhoods and blocks. We’re thinking it could be useful for those looking to plan Block Watches or just keep in touch with your neighbors.

Wouldn’t Facebook do the same thing? Probably. In some situations, a different focus of a website can make all the difference to reaching people a certain way. It all depends on what you’re comfortable with. Plus, this site has all kinds of privacy features.

Somebody not in the area or block won’t be able to access the group. They have four different ways of confirming residency: land line phone verification, postcards, neighbor invitation and credit card billing address.

To start a website on Nextdoor, you input your email and house address. It checks to see if there is one already located near you. According to their usage map, there is not currently a version of these sites in Spokane.
