LGBTQAI community reacts to Spokane being named third gayest city

The Advocate – a LGBT magazine – listed Spokane as the third “gayest city in America” in its issue that came out Wednesday.

“As much as we love fabulous soirees and mimosa brunches, there much more to LGBT life than that,” the article by Matthew Breen starts. “We live in little burgs and big cities and tons of places in between – so we're looking at the in-between.”

Spokane received seven points for having “LGBT elected officials,” according to Victory Fund endorsements, although all seven members listed by the group preside over jurisdictions on the West Side. The Lilac City got its biggest boost – five points – from recently passed legislation legalizing same-sex marriages. Also, the city received a point for “fabulous shopping” - namely the Pottery Barn downtown (718 West Main Avenue).

Spokane Valley Seahawkers rally around team

Spokane Valley Seahawkers rally around team

Saying the Spokane Valley Seahawkers are confident about their beloved NFL team's chances in this year's playoffs would be the ultimate understatement.

At the club's meeting before Sunday's matchup at the Georgia Dome against the Atlanta Falcons, members gushed about Seattle's recent strong play, and the Falcons' postseason struggles in recent years.

“They've lost their last three home playoff games,” Lynette Allen pointed out. “We'll keep that streak going.”

The fan club boasts about 80 members from Ephrata to Post Falls, who participate in a myriad of activities – including the famed bus trip to Seattle for a game every season as well as raising money for charities.

This year, the group raised more than $3,000 – as well as donating time – for Shriners Hospital for Children, the Make-a-Wish Foundation, the Ronald McDonald House, Camp Fun in the Sun, Blessings Under the Bridge and Second Harvest.

Dirty Dash registration opens

Dirty Dash registration opens

The popular Dirty Dash opened registration today for the 2013 “race” to be held at Riverside State Park on July 13.

Loyalty registration, which runs until Jan. 30, costs only $35. After that the price to sign up steadily rises the closer we get to the event.

“Resolve to make 2013 your dirtiest yet and we guarantee to make that happen for you in one unforgettable morning of feasting on filth, groveling through grime, delighting in dirt, and wallowing in mud rather than self-pity,” a news release from Dirty Dash said.

Fools float the river for 20th straight New Year

Fools float the river for 20th straight New Year

How did you spend your New Year's Day? Napping away a hangover on the couch, pretending to watch football?

That kind of afternoon sounds foolish to the group of rafters who floated the Spokane River on Tuesday. The Northwest Whitewater Association celebrated the 20th Annual Only Fools Float the River on the First the only way they knew how – by eschewing a day at home and getting onto the water despite the air being only 22 degrees when they launched.

“If you're a boater, you take every chance to get on the water,” Bruce Bernhardt said.

More than 30 people attended the event with more than 20 boats on the water.

“This is more exciting” than watching football, said Pat Keegan before launching.

Time to get rid of those Christmas trees, here's where you can do just that

Time to get rid of those Christmas trees, here's where you can do just that

While the weather outside remains frightful, the fire delightful, the tree in your living room might be seeming more and more ridiculous the further away Dec. 25 becomes. But, good news, Spokane-area residents have plenty of options in getting rid of that festive fir.

If you live in a single-family home in the city of Spokane, you have a number of options, but the most convenient would be to drop it off on your regularly-scheduled pickup day with the rest of your trash – if the tree is taller than 6 feet, the city requires you to cut it in half. Waste Management will stop offering this service Jan. 18.

Wishing Star in Need of Holiday Donations

Wishing Star in Need of Holiday Donations

Christmas is just 13 days away and this holiday season Wishing Star is asking the community to help give a little joy to those in need!

Wishing Star is a non-profit organization that grants wishes for kids battling life-threatening illnesses. Each holiday season, they help their wish families have a bright Christmas by giving them presents and gift cards. However, this year the need is greater than ever before. 46 wish families have asked for help during the holidays, which is the highest number Wishing Star has ever seen.

"Wish families have extraordinary circumstances that provide more obstacles during the Holidays than most people. Whether the parents can't work because of the high needs of the child, medical bills are too overwhelming, or they've just hit hard times, some wish families struggle to put gifts under the tree," the organization said.

If you want to donate, please contact Sarah with Wishing Star at 509-744-3411 or email her at sarahc@wishingstar.org.
