Breakfast Fundraiser with Kelly Graves

The Spokane Youth Sports Association (SYSA) is pleased to announce their upcoming "Breakfast with a Side of Sportsmanship" fundraising event on Thursday, June 7 at 7:30 am.  The breakfast will be held at the SYSA Bingo Hall on 2230 E. Sprague.

A minimum contribution of $100 is requested, but all gifts are welcome.  This year’s breakfast host is 700 ESPN's Rick Lukens and the featured speaker is Gonzaga Women's Basketball Coach, Kelly Graves.

Graves has turned the GU women’s basketball team into one of the elite programs in the nation in his 11 years at the helm.  He led GU to their unprecedented seventh-straight West Coast Conference Championship and fourth WCC Tournament Title in the last five yeaers.  He has also taken the Lady Zags to the Sweet Sixteen for the past three years and to the Elite Eight once.

SYSA has over 8000 youths participating in sports and camps throughout the year.  Over 600 youths were able to participate because of the generous support from the community totaling more than $40,000 to the SYSA Scholarship fund in 2011!

Van Halen coming to Spokane August 21st

Van Halen coming to Spokane August 21st

If a giant guitar cookie wasn't a smoking gun indicator of a surprise concert this August, maybe the Spokane Arena employees dressed a la 80s was bigger hint.

It was being kept a secret until today. Spokane Arena sent out a press release earlier this week that someone big was coming to Spokane.

Sound the air guitars. Van Halen is slated for an August 21st performance along with David Lee Roth. A fancy press conference was held Friday morning to announce the concert. It was so fancy, members of the media were given one-time press badges.

We didn't eat the cookies displayed on the tables, but we wondered what kind they were.

Tickets go on sale May 19th at 10 a.m. online at TicketsWest.

Agenda: Cliff-Cannon's Neighborhood Council

It seems like Thursday's Cliff-Cannon neighborhood meeting is going to be a bit busy with agenda items. The items of discussion are out, so in case you haven't seen them, here they are sent via email.

The group will be hosting Taylor Bressler with the City of Spokane parks and recreation department so he can talk about the city's parks and all his memories with the department. Sounds like the kind of conversation perfect for a fireside chat, or Roosevelt Elementary where the meetings are held.

On another note, Bressler once explained to me the kind of phone calls he gets regarding Cliff Park. Local wiccans always call to ask if the park has willow trees.

Also on the agenda, there will be an update for the South Hill Coalition, Land Use Committee and the Spring Clean Up event coming up later in May.

Interested in attending? They meet the 2nd Thursday of the month at Roosevelt Elementary starting at 7 p.m. I'll be there taking notes, so if you can't attend, we'll have a recap of what happened the next day. However, it's always nice to attend these meetings to get to know your neighbors and have your say in decisions made.

Also - The Scoop will be starting up live music soon. We’re still waiting to hear the official date, but from what the owner says, it could be a drumming group. Stay tuned for that.

New South Hill trail connection to Dishman Hills natural area

New South Hill trail connection to Dishman Hills natural area

Spokane County is trying to make it a little easier for you to get out and get some exercise! The county is forming a new trailhead connecting the South Hill to the Dishman Hills Natural Area this month.

The trailhead is located on the 3700 block of South Thierman Road in the Glenrose area, two miles east of Ferris High School. The county used Conservation Futures Funding to buy the 269-acre plot of land on April 12.

According to Jeff Lambert, Vice President of the Dishman Hills Natural Area Association, the new Conservation Area lies in the path of the Dream Trail, which will take the  "Connecting People to Nature" project and connect it to the Iller Creek Conservation Area on the south end of the Dishman Hills Natural Area.

Connecting the two conservation areas would result in a wildlife and recreation corridor of more than six miles, with a network of recreation trails of many miles.

The Dishman Hills Natural Area Association is holding a dinner at the Moran Prairie Grange to celebrate the new trailhead on May 12. The celebration is a member-only event, but you can join for a special $10 dues through May 12 via www.DHNAA.org.
