Washington gets mixed results in tobacco control

Washington gets mixed results in tobacco control

The state of Washington fared better than most in the American Lung Association's State of Tobacco Control 2013 report.

The report measures state and federal efforts to enact regulations and legislation that limit access to tobacco.

Washington received an F in Tobacco Prevention and Control Program funding - 41 states and Washington, D.C., also failed that category.

"A struggling economy and weak revenue forecasts continued in 2012, dashing hopes of re-establishing Washington's once successful tobacco prevention and control program," the report said. "The prgram was victim to regular cuts and was completely eliminated at the end of the 2011 legislative session leaving Washington as one of the only states without quitline services available for residents throughout the state.

Grab the girls and hit the spa and beauty show

It's the “perfect girl's day out destination.”

The 8th annual Health and Beauty Spa Show opens Saturday at the Spokane Community College Lair, and event manager Rachel Swanson says it should be a great time for any woman looking to pamper herself.

“Women can come in and get over the winter blahs,” she said. “We just want to make you feel more beautiful and glam. This is a feel-good show.”

The event will have 98 booths with about 90 vendors. There will be all sorts of health and beauty products for sale and for sample. From skin care to clothing, from scarves to jewelry.

A portion of the proceeds goes to the YWCA women's shelter. Your ticket will be discounted if you donate a canned food or hygiene item.

There will also be a Before and After contest.

“Come in all ratty, get done up, and then everybody will vote and the winner will get a night's stay at Bonneville Hot Springs Resort and Spa,” according to Swanson.

Dirty Dash registration opens

The popular Dirty Dash opened registration today for the 2013 “race” to be held at Riverside State Park on July 13.

Loyalty registration, which runs until Jan. 30, costs only $35. After that the price to sign up steadily rises the closer we get to the event.

“Resolve to make 2013 your dirtiest yet and we guarantee to make that happen for you in one unforgettable morning of feasting on filth, groveling through grime, delighting in dirt, and wallowing in mud rather than self-pity,” a news release from Dirty Dash said.

Fools float the river for 20th straight New Year

Fools float the river for 20th straight New Year

How did you spend your New Year's Day? Napping away a hangover on the couch, pretending to watch football?

That kind of afternoon sounds foolish to the group of rafters who floated the Spokane River on Tuesday. The Northwest Whitewater Association celebrated the 20th Annual Only Fools Float the River on the First the only way they knew how – by eschewing a day at home and getting onto the water despite the air being only 22 degrees when they launched.

“If you're a boater, you take every chance to get on the water,” Bruce Bernhardt said.

More than 30 people attended the event with more than 20 boats on the water.

“This is more exciting” than watching football, said Pat Keegan before launching.

Dinner/Auction to help 7-year-old with leukemia

The Spokane community has an opportunity to help the family of a 7-year-old girl suffering from a rare form of leukemia.

7-year-old Trista Cross was diagnosd a few months ago with Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia. Trista's sister, Destiny, is helping to organize a dinner and auction that will raise money for her family's living expenses.

Trista's mother quit her job in order to stay home and take care of her baby girl. With her away from her job and expensive medical expenses for Trista, the Cross family is hoping to get some help from the community.

According to Destiny, only one in a million people are diagnosed with this form of leukemia. She says that the cancer is usually only seen in people over the age of 50.

The dinner and auction will be held this Saturday, December 1, at the Eagles Lodge on Fancis and Lidgerwood. It will take place from 3-7 p.m.
