Bloomsday Training Tips With Justin Rundle

Bloomsday Training Tips With Justin Rundle

We continue our series with Justin Rundle, Head Trainer at North Park Racquet Club in North Spokane. We're talking about how to train for Bloomsday. This article will teach how to prepare with the six remaining weeks.

Training For Bloomsday

With only a little over six weeks until Bloomsday, It is definitely time to get started on your pre-Bloomsday training routine. Spokane is home to one of the world’s largest and premier road races. Our event invites some of the world’s most elite runners, but is open to walkers and first time runners. Anyone can participate! However, that doesn’t mean one should show up unprepared.

An easy to tool to get a plan laid out for any ability level is Runner’s World SmartCoach training program. This program will help you design a cost free, specific running program for your skill level and desired goal. The program will ask several questions about your goal, age, gender and ability level. From there, it will generate a daily workout schedule.

A valuable attribute to SmartCoach is the incorporation of high intensity days, short and long distance days, rest and strength training. Not only should a runner focus on running, but also, cross training with weights has been proven to boost even the best runners strength and speed. Contact us with the information below to help you develop a strength-training program designed just for Bloomsday, or the endurance athlete.

Living For Now: Linda Sheridan Battles ALS

Living For Now: Linda Sheridan Battles ALS

When we profiled former Coug Steve Gleason earlier this month about his battle with ALS, we heard from several people who all said the same thing: You need to talk to Linda Sheridan. Sheridan is a coaching legend in Spokane - the most successful prep coach in GSL history - and, she's also facing this devastating disease.

I really wanted to talk to Linda, but had heard from many people who know her well that she has been very private with the diagnosis and that getting an interview may be impossible. So, I made a call to one of the people who Linda coached - and, yesterday, we sat in Linda's interview as she shared her thoughts on this new chapter in her life.

Make no mistake: Linda Sheridan didn't talk to me because she thinks I'm some awesome reporter. She didn't do it because she wants attention. She didn't do it as a favor to her former player, who used to work here and helped us arrange the interview. Linda talked to us for one reason and one reason only: to raise awareness about the organization of volunteers that is helping Linda and her partner adjust to the new challenges in their lives.

"I want them to get some attention," she told me. "And, I would really like people to send them some money."

Invent Your Own Pasta

Invent Your Own Pasta

So there I was waiting for my creation from Huckleberries juice bar - we're talking wheatgrass, apples, ginger and the likes - when I catch the Made-to-Order Pasta Bar out of the corner of my eye.

I weighed my options: Wheatgrass? Pasta?

The choice was obvious but I had already made my decision. That didn't stop me from sauntering over with my camera phone to snap the Huckleberries pasta chef in action.

Those on the South Hill probably already know about the Made-to-Order Past Bar, but for those of us that live elsewhere, myself included, this was a new discovery for me... and gave me a reason to visit the south hill more often.

It's $8.99 per dish and boasts an array of delicious toppings. I'd probably do cheese, cheese and more cheese, but the variety is there if you're more adventurous than me.

I smell a date night on the horizon, too, because the bar is only open on Friday and Saturday nights from 1pm-9pm.

Just call me cupid.

Dieting Tips From Justin Rundle

Dieting Tips From Justin Rundle

We continue our series with Justin Rundle, Head Trainer at North Park Racquet Club in North Spokane. We're talking about acheiving success in your diet. I've talked with Justin quite a bit about the importance of diet in addition to exercise.

This article will teach why the classic three meals a day is not the optimum way to go when it comes to your diet. It's smaller meals that really ramp up your metablolism.

Step One For Dieting Success

When working with a client on a goal for overall toning and weight loss, the outcome is usually determined by whether or not the person is willing and determined enough to follow our philosophy on diet.

Don’t get me wrong. We generally have regular success stories. Not to mention, our clients are always healthier in the end than when they started. But aesthetically speaking, for changing one’s appearance, it is nearly impossible to outwork your diet.

The common percentage used for importance of diet in contrast to exercise, rest and genetics is usually around 80 percent of the determining factor in one’s fitness goal. That is why when one is following our system, and seeing continual progress, we know the person is fully committed to all aspects of the game plan.

Tell me about your job at North Park and what your responsibilities are.

My responsibilities at North Park are to provide my expertise in fitness, wellness and nutrition to anyone in need of a healthier lifestyle. This generally requires an initial consultation to develop ones goals, build a strategic plan and implement a nutrition and fitness plan that will have the most chance of success towards achieving any desired fitness goal.

You work closely with your wife, how does that relationship work?

Fortunately for us, fitness is one of the aspects of our lives we are both passionate about. We have always loved pushing each other to stay fit and to pursue our fitness goals. From this, we found we were not only good at motivating each other, but others as well. We often collaborate on client's fitness goals and believe in the philosophy, two heads is better than one. Although there are moments where we are able to work together, most of the times busy training clients separately.

So, we actually don't spend as much time together as most people think.

March Madness: Kitten Edition

March Madness: Kitten Edition

Spokanimal employees were just about to celebrate the adoption of the last 50 animals seized in a hoarding case in Hillyard, when 16 more cats came into their care.

The cats were surrendered by their owner and an additional 15 to 20 more cats are coming to make the grand total of about 36 cats.

Spokanimal says overpopulation continues to be a critical issue for cats, so they're jumping on the spring kitten influx early and offering discounted neuter rates.

Male cats can be neutered for $20. The normal cost is $30.

To schedule an appointment call their spay and neuter clinic at 509-534-8133 ex 204.
