LC warning parents about Facebook "Confessions page" | News

Lewis and Clark High School is taking a stand against cyber bullying after a Facebook "Confessions page" for the school was created that targeted both LC students and staff.

The anonymous page contained pictures of certain students with hurtful captions and was a way for some students to spread nasty rumors about their classmates. The page has since been taken down and parents and students have been notified about it.

The school recently sent out a recorded call to parents about the incident, and in a news letter the principal firmly stated that the "the pages are an embarrassment to our school, a disruption to learning and are really just plain cruel."

vo The Spokane School District said cyber bullying in the district won't be tolerated. As of now, the district says they haven't been able to find out who created the page but say school counselors are checking in with the students who were targeted.

In the end, they say the best way to reduce cyber bullying is to change school culture.

"It's really about the core of why does a kid choose a decision of hate, over letting something go and solving it in a different way, resolving it instead of pushing it forward, so that's really what people should be focused on is how do we get kids to shift their lens," Angela Jones, director of Employment and Conciliation Services, said.

These Facebook confessions pages have been created at other Spokane high schools in the past.

The district said families need to be aware of these issues and talk to their kids about bullying and how it can hurt others.
