In Brief: Pumpkins Will Race to Victory

In Brief: Pumpkins Will Race to Victory

There’s something about “Great” and “Pumpkin” that makes so much sense in the same sentence. A trumpet will herald the “Great Pumpkin Race” tomorrow at noon.

The community and neighborhood businesses are pitching in for this first ever event on the South Hill. Hot cider and cookies will be available to attendees as they watch pumpkins race to victory.

The race takes place at 17th and Madison. Space is limited, so it’s recommended to arrive early with your pumpkin and its racing wheels. For more information, visit the Great Pumpkin Race website.

SpokAnimal CARE Needs Cat Litter Donations

SpokAnimal CARE Needs Cat Litter Donations

For the first time in more than a decade, SpokAnimal says they have run out of non-clumping cat litter.

SpokAnimal uses non-clumping litter because the litter boxes are completely changed out every day due to the risk of disease.  Staff and volunteers have been forced to use shredded paper and clumping litter as a temporary substitute.

SpokAnimal CARE Director Gail Mackie says it has been an extremely busy season with hundreds of cats and kittens coming into the shelter.

The shelter's cat room uses about 10 pounds of litter every day.

SpokAnimal accepts donations at the humane society Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.

Calls For Cats

Calls For Cats

The Spokane County Regional Animal Protection Service, or SCRAPS, is so overwhelmed with cats and dogs, they need your help. The animal shelter received 23 animals Tuesday, many of them had ran away from their homes because of the Fourth of July fireworks. Some had to be transferred to a rescue facility on the west side of the state to make room in the Scraps facility. Scraps is offering a special on adult cats all week thru Saturday. Licenses are 15 dollars.

A Reminder from SCRAPS this 4th of July

A Reminder from SCRAPS this 4th of July

Fireworks might be fun for humans, but they're not fun for pets. Today, Spokane County Regional Animal Protection Services or SCRAPS warns pet owners to keep their four legged friends in a safe spot this 4th of July weekend.

SCRAPS says an owner's best bet is putting your pet in a safe place inside your house. Even if you think your yard is secure, SCRAPS says the loud noises scare some pets so badly they find a way to break out of the yard. It says it responds to dozens of calls during the 4th of scared pets running loose or cowering in odd places.

Adopt A Furry Friend

Adopt A Furry Friend

There's new reason tonight to adopt from SCRAPS Animal Shelter. Not only will a new cat or dog give you the love and companionship of a pet, it's a lot cheaper to bring them home.

SCRAPS is offering $25 off adoption fees every Friday this month. They hope the discount will be enough incentive to get people to adopt a new pet. The shelter is almost at full capacity. They say the only other alternatives are transferring the animals to other shelters or euthanasia.

Adopting a cat will cost you $62.70.
