Manito. Cannon Hill Neighborhood Council announces new crosswalks

Crossing the street on the South Hill just got safer.

The Manito. Cannon Hill Neighborhood Council announced late Tuesday night that two crosswalks have been approved in their area: One at 29th and Manito Boulevard; the other at 25th and Bernard Avenue.

"It is hard to cross in that area," neighborhood council officer Ann Bergeman said. "On the boulevard, you've got walkers with dogs, people pushing strollers, it's a really active place to walk."

The 29th and Manito crosswalk will have crossing signs and street striping.

The city will add the crosswalks when it is finishing its project of repaving 29th to High Drive.

“No lighting is planned at this time, though it may be considered in the future,” a news release from the council said.

The project should be finished in Fall 2013.

Bergeman sees the success of this push as an important reminder to City Council that it should not reappropriate its red light funds away from traffic calming in neighborhoods and into the general fund.

"That's what the fund is designed to do, and the City Council will revisit that this year, and I think the neighborhoods need to let their council members know that the neighborhoods need those funds for traffic calming and keeping them safe," she said.
