Manito. Cannon Hill Neighborhood Council announces new crosswalks

Manito. Cannon Hill Neighborhood Council announces new crosswalks

Crossing the street on the South Hill just got safer.

The Manito. Cannon Hill Neighborhood Council announced late Tuesday night that two crosswalks have been approved in their area: One at 29th and Manito Boulevard; the other at 25th and Bernard Avenue.

"It is hard to cross in that area," neighborhood council officer Ann Bergeman said. "On the boulevard, you've got walkers with dogs, people pushing strollers, it's a really active place to walk."

The 29th and Manito crosswalk will have crossing signs and street striping.

The city will add the crosswalks when it is finishing its project of repaving 29th to High Drive.

“No lighting is planned at this time, though it may be considered in the future,” a news release from the council said.

The project should be finished in Fall 2013.

Dirty Dash registration opens

Dirty Dash registration opens

The popular Dirty Dash opened registration today for the 2013 “race” to be held at Riverside State Park on July 13.

Loyalty registration, which runs until Jan. 30, costs only $35. After that the price to sign up steadily rises the closer we get to the event.

“Resolve to make 2013 your dirtiest yet and we guarantee to make that happen for you in one unforgettable morning of feasting on filth, groveling through grime, delighting in dirt, and wallowing in mud rather than self-pity,” a news release from Dirty Dash said.

Fools float the river for 20th straight New Year

Fools float the river for 20th straight New Year

How did you spend your New Year's Day? Napping away a hangover on the couch, pretending to watch football?

That kind of afternoon sounds foolish to the group of rafters who floated the Spokane River on Tuesday. The Northwest Whitewater Association celebrated the 20th Annual Only Fools Float the River on the First the only way they knew how – by eschewing a day at home and getting onto the water despite the air being only 22 degrees when they launched.

“If you're a boater, you take every chance to get on the water,” Bruce Bernhardt said.

More than 30 people attended the event with more than 20 boats on the water.

“This is more exciting” than watching football, said Pat Keegan before launching.

City pools close before Labor Day

City pools close before Labor Day

Spokane kids won't be able to spend their last summer days diving into the city's pools before school gets under way.

The city's six aquatic centers close on Saturday, leaving many people wondering : Why can't they stay open until Labor Day?

The city said the pools typically close before then for several reasons - budget, staffing and a drop in attendance come mid-August.

City pool patrons like Martyn Quinn wish he could be diving in for a few more days.

"I wish they would go right up at least until when the school kids go back on September 4th. I think that would be better if they opened for a little longer," Quinn said.

The city sets the pool's closing date a year in advance.

"We have staff that are either in college or high school and they are leaving, so the last few weeks it's usually a fight to keep enough staff and we are scrambling to keep enough people around," said Carl Strong,, the aquatics supervisor with the city's Parks and Recreation Department.

But just a few miles away at the Southside Aquatic Center, pool patrons like Don Cheney get to play around until Labor Day.
