Invent Your Own Pasta

Invent Your Own Pasta

So there I was waiting for my creation from Huckleberries juice bar - we're talking wheatgrass, apples, ginger and the likes - when I catch the Made-to-Order Pasta Bar out of the corner of my eye.

I weighed my options: Wheatgrass? Pasta?

The choice was obvious but I had already made my decision. That didn't stop me from sauntering over with my camera phone to snap the Huckleberries pasta chef in action.

Those on the South Hill probably already know about the Made-to-Order Past Bar, but for those of us that live elsewhere, myself included, this was a new discovery for me... and gave me a reason to visit the south hill more often.

It's $8.99 per dish and boasts an array of delicious toppings. I'd probably do cheese, cheese and more cheese, but the variety is there if you're more adventurous than me.

I smell a date night on the horizon, too, because the bar is only open on Friday and Saturday nights from 1pm-9pm.

Just call me cupid.

Rocket Market Adding Fresh Sushi To Menu

Not really breaking news or newsworthy, but for those of you that live in the upper South Hill area, you might be excited to know that Rocket Market is bringing in a sushi chef to slice up the fish Tuesday through Saturday.

Or if you're vegetarian, the cucumbers and other fancy things that get put into sushi.

The corner market and gas station announced the menu addition on their newsletter Friday afternoon. We haven't had a chance to stop by yet to try it out, but if you do, let us know how it is.

The selected chef, Jae-Eob Jeon opened Sushi Sakai in Spokane Valley in 2010. According to The Spokesman-Review, Jae-Eob also goes by James and is a native of Korea where he worked in the restaurant business for 15 years and then moved to the Inland Northwest in 2005 to be closer to family.

Fatburger Expands In Inland Northwest

You soon won't have to drive all the way to Airway Heights to sink your teeth into a fat burger anymore.

Fatburger North America Incorporated has made the Kalispel Tribal Economic Authority the franchisee for new restaurants in the Spokane/Coeur d'Alene area.

Fatburger restaurant in Northern Quest Resort and Casino is so popular it consistently ranks in the top ten among Fatburger franchises. Now its success has Fatburger North America Inc. depending on the Tribe to find locations for new restaurants in major Washington and Idaho areas.

Each new Fatburger will employ about 30 employees.

Serving Up Alligator in Spokane

Serving Up Alligator in Spokane

(Updated 2:29 p.m.) - In some parts of the country, serving alligator meat in a thing. From personal experience, I can recall a BBQ off the side of some random highway in Florida that serves it up fried.

The chicken-like meat is available in Spokane at Huckleberry's according to the SpoCool blog. Why does that not surprise us? They even have elk, buffalo, quail and duck, in their freezers there.

If you've ever wanted to know how to cook it up for the family, there are a couple recipes online that could be decent for the dinner table. Food Network's website has 16 recipes for alligator including a "General Tso's Gator Alligator" and apparently there's a woman named Patty who has famous 'gator' recipes in Florida.

We also learned of some local uses of alligator. Chef David Blaine, Latah Bistro, says Downriver Grill will be cooking up alligator "nuggets" for Mardi Gras. He also informed us of an Idaho alligator farm where he's served up some of the meat before.

Take A Seat At The Silver Cafe

Take A Seat At The Silver Cafe

Spokane is on the cutting edge – at least for Spokane County's Meals on Wheels program.

The county is about to enter territory that has never been explored by opening a Silver Cafe to the public. Normally, Silver Cafes are built in senior homes, where those 60-years-of-age and older can enjoy a home cooked meal for very little or no cost.

The idea to open the cafe to the public started with Pam Almeida, the Executive Director of the county's Meals on Wheels program (not to be confused with Mid-City Concerns Meals on Wheels, which is a different agency.)

“We had been told many times before that our food was good and restaurant quality,” Almeida said. So she thought why should our seniors be the only ones to enjoy the food?

Almeida has been to the Moose Crossing Cafe along Nevada in North Spokane before, but on this particular day there was a sign that simply said: “Because of road construction, we couldn't maintain our customer base.”

They were closed.

Discount Card Helps Non-Profits, Businesses and Consumers

Discount Card Helps Non-Profits, Businesses and Consumers

At the Corner Cottage in Hillyard, you can find pink porcelain pumps or painted tea pots. And if you bring the purple card you can also find some significant savings.

The card is the Spokane Grapevine Discount Card. The brain child of Monte Tareski, the $25 dollar discount card offers consumers a variety of discounts from local businesses across the region.

But it gets better. Local charities are selling the purple card, through local retailers, with 40 percent of the cost going directly to their programs.

That means for every card sold by Cancer Patient Care they get around $10. Melissa Halverson, the development director for Cancer Patient Care says, "We help with all those different financial areas even getting groceries or keeping the electricity on."

Froyo Store Expects Big Business Near Trader Joe's

Froyo Store Expects Big Business Near Trader Joe's

A new frozen yogurt store called Go Froyo opened in Spokane Valley and owners say they plan on opening two more stores in the area.

Co-owner Nancy Chen said they are opening a second store this week in North Spokane.  They've also purchased the site where China South used to be and plan to open a larger store.

Go Froyo plans to open a larger store at the 29th Avenue location because they believe a location near Trader Joe's will bring in more business, Chen said.

Other businesses in the area also expect to see a boost in business thanks to a new Trader Joe's store that opened just a few weeks ago.  It's the first store of the chain in the area and seems to attract a cult following.
