Lincoln Heights student honored as crosswalk guard

Lincoln Heights student honored as crosswalk guard

You see them on your morning commute, elementary kids patrolling crosswalks ensuring the safety of pedestrians, their classmates. Last week, a Spokane 6th grader was honored for his role as a patrolman at Lincoln Heights Elementary.

Hunter Stokes is one of ten students inducted into the 2012 AAA School Safety Patrol Hall of Fame. He was recognized at an awards ceremony at Safeco Field on May 4th.

His patrol adviser, Terri Cates, says Stokes saw many close calls at crossing stations and wanted to make it safer. His solution was to require cars park at least 20 feet away to avoid blocking the view of the crosswalk.

The ten other students honored were from areas of Western Washington and Ritzville.

One popsicle bridge was not #winning

One popsicle bridge was not #winning

While covering Tuesday's bridge contest at Gonzaga Prep, we couldn't help but notice one bridge that had high hopes for "winning". Students decked out the popsicle bridge with the smiling face of Charlie Sheen.

The Sheen Bridge didn't get that far. It's not that it was crushed under the forced weight, it just tipped over. Charlie Sheen's smile turned upside down.

One of the students disclosed an engineering flaw in their design. This isn't the first time their bridge has tipped. Ryan Pennell, junior student, says the same thing happened last year.

"I'm kind of disappointed. It just flipped. It didn't really break. Our bridge last year flipped too," Pennell said.

Mark Your Calendar: Twin Cities' Augsburg Choir

When we receive press releases from music groups about upcoming performances in town, we always wonder what these groups sound like. Augsburg College Choir from Minnesota is touring through Spokane in May so of course we Googled them and found this 2009 performance of the Scottish folk song Loch Lomond.

There's something about the uniform sound of voices that sparks a little emotion. Thankfully that's why headphones were created for the newsroom environment.

The 60-voice a cappella choir has toured all over the United States and the world, most recently traveling overseas to China in 2010.

The thing about school choirs, they're ever-changing. Students graduate and music groups transition into new sounds. The group coming to Spokane will include a repretoire of romantic, American spirituals and world sounds.

Mark Your Calendar: They're performing at Central Lutheran Church, located at 512 S. Bernard Street on Saturday, May 12th at 7 p.m.

Public forums planned for Superintendent position

Two public community forums are scheduled for next week to interview finalists for the Spokane Public Schools superintendent position.

The finalists, Dr. Alexander Apostle from Missoula County Public Schools in Montana and Dr. Shelley Redinger from Spotsylvania County Schools in Virginia, are available during the forum for Q&A with attendees. Any comments not given during the forum can be given to the district’s Board of Directors at the end of the forum.

  • Wednesday, April 11th, 5:30-6:30 p.m. at Sacajawea Middle School, located at 401 E. 33rd Ave.
  • Thursday, April 12th, 5:30-6:30 p.m. at Glover Middle School, located at 2404 W. Longfellow Ave.

Both the finalists are superintendents at their current school districts. Apostle’s previous education experience is based in Western Washington. Redinger has some experience as an assistant principal and principal at Central Washington schools.

A decision will be made regarding the position later this month. The new superintendent would start July 1st.

5k Heart Run Benefits Homeless Students

5k = 3 miles... you can do it! The Central Valley PTA and PTSA are hosting a 5k run to benefit the HEART program, which exists in all school districts to support homeless students.

This particular run will benefit the Central Valley HEART program, which helps CV families find permanent housing, heating sources, Christmas gifts and has helped provide Thanksgiving dinners for more than 60 families. Last year, approximately 350 students in the CV School District qualified for the HEART program.
