High Drive Bluff Discussion Planned For Next Week

Maybe you've walked along the High Drive Bluff and marveled at the Spokane sunsets or stumbled upon a moose on the trails. There's a local group of neighbors that meet occasionally to talk about taking care of the bluff for future use. They're called Friends of the High Drive Bluff.

They're meeting next week on Wednesday, February 29th, to plan the season's plans for sustainable trail creation, fire risk reduction, week management and litter removal.

The meeting is open to everyone. If you use the trail and would like to share your input, this is your opportunity. The group is meeting on Wednesday, February 29th from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at St. Stephens Episcopal Church, located at 5720 South Perry Street.

Fairways Welcomes Golfers

Fairways Welcomes Golfers

It's February in Cheney, so that means it's time for...golf?

Fairways Golf Course is now open for play on 18 permanent greens thanks to the relatively mild and dry weather we've enjoyed this winter.  Fairways GM Kris Kallen says the course has been open on and off all winter, and this was the third consecutive January that Fairways has been open on at least a part-time basis.

Fairways is open for walking play only, weather and conditions permitting, starting at 10:00 a.m. each day.  You can check course conditions or make a tee time by calling 509-747-8418 or by visiting their website.

Moose sightings continue at High Drive Bluff

Moose sightings continue at High Drive Bluff

More sightings of the young High Drive Bluff moose happened over the weekend. Bicyclist and blogger, John Speare encountered a trail hog during one of his rides causing him to double back to avoid any confrontation.

Speare saw just the younger moose. Like the previous sighting covered on the site last week, the alleged mother was nearby, but out of view.

For those using the trails, use caution when near the moose. After all - they are still wild animals.

“I don’t think we (humans in modern urban world) really appreciate the “wild” part of animals sometimes,” Speare wrote in response to his blog post. He continued, “I fear that a human may do something stupid down there, get trampled/hurt/killed by a moose, and then the moose will be disappeared - that would be a shame.”

Seattle Mariners pitchers visiting Spokane

Seattle Mariners pitchers visiting Spokane

Every year the Seattle Mariners likes to show off some of their up and coming players on the team. This year they’re shipping Blake Beavan and Tom Wilhelmsen around the Pacific Northwest to visit with fans and schools. Beavan and Wilhelmsen are both pitchers who debuted during the 2011 season.

They’ll be making a stop in Spokane next week. On Wednesday, January 11th, they’ll stop by Spokane Falls Community College for a free autograph session. Broadcaster Mike Blowers and the Mariner Moose will be with them as well.

The Mariner’s head to spring training in Arizona on March 2nd so they’re still well into the off-season at this point.

The Seattle Mariners have been doing their northwest tour for the past 20 years.

Pitcher Blake Beavan was one of four rookie pitchers to make his Major League debut with the Mariners in 2011. He had 15 starts, 11 of them recorded as “quality starts.” His debut, and first win, was July 3 vs. San Diego. Beavan allowed just one run on three hits over seven innings in a 3-1 victory. Beavan was one of four players obtained from the Texas Rangers in July 2010 for pitcher Cliff Lee.

All Corduroy On Sale At Mt. Spokane

All Corduroy On Sale At Mt. Spokane

Don't let the lack of snow in town keep you off the slopes this week. Expertly-groomed, silky smooth corduroy runs await you at the local ski areas, and Mt Spokane Ski & Snowboard Park is making it even more affordable for you to take advantage.

Corduroy refers to the tracks left on the runs by the grooming equipment. It looks just like the material, and it is awesome for carving out clean turns.

During its "Corduroy Sale", Mt. Spokane is rolling back its holiday pricing on lift tickets to mid-week pricing Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of this week. The sale saves adults $13 per ticket, and kids and college students save $10. Midweek season passes, which are normally blacked-out during the holidays, will be allowed on Wednesday, Thursday & Friday as well.

As I have experienced first-hand, snow conditions are holding up very well despite the lack of recent snowfall. The folks at Mt. Spokane say the cold weather coupled with their top-notch grooming practices have preserved the base with full coverage on the groomed runs. HAVE FUN!

What's your favorite state park? Share!

Apparently this survey has been floating around for awhile, but the Washington State Parks Foundation wants to know what your favorite state park is. They've been asking this question for about a year and 103 state parks have been mentioned - out of 116 state parks.

They say the most popular are Deception Pass, Fort Flagler, Grayland Beach and Cape Disappointment. None of those are Eastern Washington parks!
