Dirty Dash registration opens

The popular Dirty Dash opened registration today for the 2013 “race” to be held at Riverside State Park on July 13.

Loyalty registration, which runs until Jan. 30, costs only $35. After that the price to sign up steadily rises the closer we get to the event.

“Resolve to make 2013 your dirtiest yet and we guarantee to make that happen for you in one unforgettable morning of feasting on filth, groveling through grime, delighting in dirt, and wallowing in mud rather than self-pity,” a news release from Dirty Dash said.

Fools float the river for 20th straight New Year

Fools float the river for 20th straight New Year

How did you spend your New Year's Day? Napping away a hangover on the couch, pretending to watch football?

That kind of afternoon sounds foolish to the group of rafters who floated the Spokane River on Tuesday. The Northwest Whitewater Association celebrated the 20th Annual Only Fools Float the River on the First the only way they knew how – by eschewing a day at home and getting onto the water despite the air being only 22 degrees when they launched.

“If you're a boater, you take every chance to get on the water,” Bruce Bernhardt said.

More than 30 people attended the event with more than 20 boats on the water.

“This is more exciting” than watching football, said Pat Keegan before launching.

Another picnic table pyramid rises during the night

Another picnic table pyramid rises during the night

They came in the night with their picnic table stacking hijinks. Another pyramid structure consisting of 36 picnic tables has been constructed in Spokane - this time in Manito Park. Like a cherry on top, they even crowned the pyramid with traffic reflectors.

This is the third pyramid stack reported in Spokane in recent times. Park officials say two similar structures appeared in Riverfront Park on Saturday and Tuesday.

It takes a bucket truck from Urban Forestry to dismantle the pyramids. It’s estimated that the unstacking process costs the parks department about $500 to take the tables down one by one.

To protect picnic tables in Riverfront Park from future shenanigans, the tables were distributed throughout the park to make it harder for whoever is responsible.

Beer stickers immortalized inside property facility

Beer stickers immortalized inside property facility

It’s been almost a year since local law enforcement moved into their property facility in east Spokane. Six employees are watching over about 150,000 items of evidence, stolen or found property at 4010 E. Alki. The venue is slowly filling up with items, but there's still plenty of room to last the region about 75-years of service.

There’s not much decor set up in facility except a stuffed cougar connected to an ongoing property investigation, but remnants of previous residents have left their mark.

The warehouse used to be occupied by Columbia Distributing until about eight years ago. They’re now located in Spokane Valley. The property facility was turned over to local agencies in October of 2011.

Their employees must have accumulated quite a collection of beer stickers because they left it behind near one of the loading doors. Recognize any of those beers?

South Spokane STCU installs new bike rack

South Spokane STCU installs new bike rack

By popular demand, STCU's South Hill branch has installed a cool new bike rack this week. Now you can fulfill all your banking and bike storage needs by attaching your bike to a bike.

It's a little meta, but hopefully it gets the job done and prevents bike thefts.

New television show makes quick jab at the 509

Any former Western Washington transplants want to comment on this? For those of you that remember Almost Live over in the Seattle area, the crew is getting back together for a new TV show reports My Northwest. Their previous stint on the airwaves was cancelled in 1999.

This is fabulous news for those that grew up watching Bill Nye the Science Guy in his other gig and spend their sleepless nights watching clips of Almost Live on Youtube and dreaming of a similar show for Spokanites.

And then we read this:

Former star of Almost Live! Pat Cashman tells Dave and Luke he has the answer. The 'band' got back together, but under a new name: The 206.

"We briefly debated calling it 'Definitely not The 509.'"

Share: Is anyone else a little bummed they totally just made fun of Eastern Washington? In the meantime, we'll watch Pat Cashman scream at a "pack of reporters".

The Colbert Report mentions Spokane's proposed budget cuts

The Colbert Report mentions Spokane's proposed budget cuts

Well, this comes to us as a shocker. A story we published last week was mentioned on the Colbert Report. We only know this because a dedicated reader took a screenshot and sent it to us.

The segment was titled: “Unscooped Dog Poop Crime-Busting Service” and talks about cuts to community services in cities across the nation. Good ol’ Spokane was mentioned for the proposed cuts, specifically the proposed $1 million that could be eliminated from the city’s parks budget for 2013.

Probably a good time to remind people that there are two upcoming community meetings to discuss the cuts. There’s one on June 26th at 5:30 p.m. at the Southside Community Center located at 3151 E. 27th and another on June 28th at 5:30 p.m. at the Northeast Community Center located at 4001 N. Cook.

You can also fill out a survey online that goes to the city. If you go to the meeting, you can converse with people about the cuts. If you fill out the survey online, you can remain in your pajamas.
